Paul McCormack

CEO, Hydrogen Ireland

A Green H2 and P2X pioneer, research & innovation specialist Paul has many years of extensive skills and experience in developing, leading and delivering international projects. As a Green Hydrogen proponent Paul is passionate about tackling the climate crisis, generating energy security, and building resilient communities with hydrogen as the catalyst for change. These projects include the €12.36M GenComm project which seeks to address the barriers preventing the greater integration of renewables into our energy matrix and to navigate a new energy pathway to energy security.  GenComm (GENerating energy secure COMMunities); is a Smart Hydrogen (SMARTH2) Integrated renewable energy, generation and storage project designed to develop a new model for exploiting generated electricity from renewable sources to provide energy security for remote communities. The GenComm project demonstrated how hydrogen as an energy carrier can be the new energy pathway and overcome the current obstacles blocking greater utilisation of renewable energy in our energy consumption matrix.

A founding member of Hydrogen Ireland Paul is also leading on several international clean energy projects including HOST, H2AZEL and H2CAT, Paul is helping accelerate the EU clean hydrogen journey, develop innovative sector coupling opportunities, establish alternative pathways to net zero and stimulating industry to pivot to new green economy models. Paul has also established the world’s first Hydrogen Training Academy delivering accredited training to empower industry to pivot to clean, green opportunities through skills transitions.

His current research and development work is focused on creating a new energy equation for the hydrogen economy, developing an approach and formula that represents the true economic, community and environmental cost of energy with the key aspects of energy production, consumption, and efficiency within a hydrogen-based energy system. This innovative approach and resultant ‘balanced’ equation is intended to assist policymakers, engineers, and researchers to understand the full value of hydrogen and to better understand and optimise the hydrogen economy at all stages of the value chain.  His vision is to rise to our energy challenges and use this opportunity to; ensure green hydrogen is commodified, build a stronger resilient global green economy, deliver global energy security, and ensure a just transition for all.

Currently leading several international clean energy projects, Paul is helping accelerate the clean energy journey, develop innovative sector coupling opportunities, establish alternative pathways to net zero and stimulating industry to pivot to new green economy models and ensuring it has the skills it needs for an economy in transition.

Paul has a robust record of achievement in all levels of management roles including founder/CEO of multi-award-winning start-up SMEs, securing several international awards for innovation and leading highly successful international collaborative projects. Project successes include forming, submitting and winning several EU R&D bids including the €12.36M GenComm renewable energies bid and the H2020 BIMcert project – the first H2020 project secured by any college in the FE sector. Other project work includes leading winning project bids on renewable energy, energy storage, green technology, clean technology, cyber security, IOT adaptations and Smart Cities.
